Festival, or a Fringe Benefit?
by Peter Goers
The 1994 Adelaide Festival opened on friday night and so far we're having a Fringe with a festival on the side - heavy on the Soy sauce. The Fringe has captured the heart of Adelaide and given our city its self-esteem back.
Pick of the shows are The 1000 Eyes of Dr Mabuse, The Tempest and, amazingly enough, Bitch! Dyke! Faghag! Whore! The latter is really a Festival show but it's definitely on the Fringe. Bitch! Dyke! Faghag! Whore! is the perfect answer to trevor Griffin - if anyone can think of a question.
It's an ideal show for anyone 8 -80. Actually it's a one woman show staring Penny Arcade and jazzed up with some erotic dancers. Penny Arcade is a profane, powerful prophetess and a bloody marvelous comedienne. She's the new Elaine may. Miss Arcade gives a New Yorker's view of prostitution, disco, the constitutional rights for Americans to bare arms, and, indeed their whole bodies, and sex, sex, sex, and love.
She is not to be missed. Although Penny Arcade performs at The Proscenium Club in Blyth St, she'd be much better off at the Star Club at the Fringe where she really belongs.
